Clostridium difficile-associated diarrhea.
At our hospital, the number of cases of Clostridium difficile-associated diarrhoea increased from 29 in 1993 to 210 in 1995. The majority of the patients (106) had received antibiotics before the onset of diarrhoea; 46 had received three or more different antibio...

Sir—We read with interest the article by Pépin et al. [1], which reports that use of quinolones is a major risk factor for illness during an outbreak of Clostridium difficile–associated diarrhea (CDAD). These results confirm previous observations that quinolones and other antibiotics, such as third-generation cephalosporins, macrolides, broad-spectrumb-lactams, and aminoglycosides, are importan...
متن کاملFluoroquinolone Use and Clostridium difficile–Associated Diarrhea
We performed a case-control study to evaluate the association between antibiotic use and Clostridium difficile-associated diarrhea (CDAD), matching for admission unit and time at risk for CDAD. A multivariable regression model showed that treatment with fluoroquinolones (odds ratio 12.7; 95% confidence interval 2.6 to 61.6) was the strongest risk factor for CDAD.
